2016's Top Twitter Moments

2016's Top Twitter Moments

The month of December, Santa and his sack soon to be spilled, so time to have a look back on 2016's best Twitter moments in the world of football.

Well it is if you like that kind of thing I suppose, I certainly won't be offended if you decide to read something else instead!

The Daily Star seem to have done the legwork on this one and put together the top ten moments from this calendar year when it came to Twitter explosions to events in football matches that happened this last 11 and a bit months.

And it has been an interesting year with the European Championships, not least Leicester City winning the Premier League, and varying stories relating to the England national team - and that's before we discuss on pitch performance.

So what made the top ten.

10 - Dejan Lovren's winner for Liverpool against Borussia Dortmund comes in at ten with an accepted 50,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

9 - England's scoreless draw with Slovakia at Euro 2016 topped out at 51,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

8 - Also a Euro 2016 moment, Manchester United's Bastian Schweinsteiger's penalty miss for Germany against Italy brought in 52,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

7 - Leicester City's Jamie Vardy's backheel goal in the friendly against Germany earlier in the year brought in 56,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

6 - Portugal's Eder scoring the winner against France brought in 58,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

5 - A bit closer to home, Burnley's Sam Vokes scoring to help Wales to victory over Belgium brought in 59,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

4 - Tottenham Hotspur's Eric Dier scoring the freekick against Russia brought in 60,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

3 - Third place sees Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge with his winner against Wales and that topped out at 77,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

2 - Comfortably in second place are Leicester City who were officially crowned as Premier League Champions 2015/16 following the Tottenham and Chelsea clash and that brought in 107,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

Finally the winner and for some reason it makes me smile.

1 - England lose to Iceland at the Euros brought in an at peak total of 128,000 tweets per minute.

I'm imagine out of those thousands upon thousands of tweets in the Iceland game, there's probably not one that could be published in good conscience, so I'm not even going to search.
